Ocean

Anglers fishing
the inshore wrecks
and the structure
on Reef Sites 10
and 11 have been
reporting
excellent tog
fishing, but the
season will be
closing in a
couple of days. Newly
approved tog
regulations
included a season
closure from May
12 through June
30. The cut in the
season will bring
the state into
line with
federally mandated
harvest reductions
on the species. While
the tog will be
off limits,
reports coming in
over the past
couple of weeks
indicated the
early arrival of
black sea bass in
inshore waters
including DB buoy,
the Old Grounds
and Reef Site II.
Delaware
Bay – Bay
fishing has really
started to heat
up, with anglers
focusing on
striped bass,
flounder, and
black drum.
Reports of keeper
rockfish have been
coming in from the
areas around the
32 and 34 buoys,
Joe Flogger Shoal,
Woodland Beach,
Cross Ledge and
Ship John, with
most fishermen
chunking with
fresh bunker or
clams.
Flounder are just
starting to move
up the bay, with
some of the best
fishing right now
reported along the
shore from Lewes
to Broadkill
Beach, Roosevelt
Inlet, Broadkill
River and the
Rehoboth-Lewes
Canal.
Scattered catches
of black drum in
the 15- to
25-pound range
have been reported
by bay anglers for
a month or so, but
we didn’t hear
of any real
monster sized fish
until last weekend
when an 86-pounder
was landed at the
Coral Beds off of
Slaughter Beach.
The best bet for
drum fishing is
night fishing over
hard or shell
bottom with fresh
clams for bait. |
